In April 2000, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation hosted a "Technical Experts Working Group Meeting on Physical Activity and Mid-life and Older Adults" in Nashville, Tennessee. The 23 participants (representing science and medicine, public health, aging services, communications, academia, government, and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation) reviewed the current situation related to increasing physical activity among mid-life and older adults, discussed some of the most important gaps and opportunities for program development, and considered elements of effective interventions.

An immediate result of the comprehensive gathering of industry professionals was the recognition of the many barriers which impact physical activities in the 50+ population as well as the isolation in which service providers and related professional often attempt to meet these essential needs.

Participants recommended that a national "blueprint" be developed to help guide and focus the work of the organizations that are involved, or interested in, physical activity among people age 50 and older, as well as to engage additional groups.

Thus, the final result, which marks the true beginning...

The Coalition for Healthy Living After 50 has partnered with many community agencies, service providers, industry leaders, employers and other organizations to bring this important programming to the Lafayette community. By coordinating the efforts of so many professionals and making services more readily accessible, the Coalition's primary goal is to serve the growing need to increase physical activity levels for those over 50.
